For a while, we have heard about a possible move by Fabio Coentrao from Benfica in Portugal to Real Madrid. There were rumors that the deal was going to be hijacked by Chelsea, but it seems that Real Madrid have signed him.... The deal between Real and Benfica is done, but he must now agree to personal terms and pass a medical.
Coentrao is a fantastic player that really made a name for himself at the last World Cup. His natural position is left back. Left back is a position that is hard to fill for a lot of teams. You must be able to run for days and defend well. It also helps if you have a little attacking fliar. Lets watch some of his highlights from the last year or so....
If any of you follow world soccer at all, there is an obvious question at hand.... What happens to Marcelo? He plays left back for Real Madrid and had a career year and was named to many All-World XI teams.... Lets watch him....
I am not sure what is going to happen, but this is what I suspect.... Coentrao is going to move to right back... Why would you spend $30,000,000 on a player just to move him to a different position? One of Real's best signings in recent history was Angel Di Maria. Where did he come from? That's right, Benfica. He play in the left of the midfield there and was supported by who? Right again, Coentrao. Di Maria successfully switched to the right and I think Real plans to do the same with Coentrao. They already have played together and now how to link up well... This will push Sergio Ramos to the central defense. There he will link up with Carvalho and Pepe will move to a hybrid defensive midfielder. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Seems like a pretty tasty lineup to me....
